Developed by Dr. Robert Rutledge in 1997, Mini-Gastric Bypass surgery was designed to be a more efficient alternative to gastric bypass surgery by reducing operating time, simplifying the procedure and reducing complications.
Your stomach will be divided by a laparoscopic stapler to the size of a small pouch, resulting in most of the stomach no longer being attached to the oesophagus and therefore not receiving any food. The next stage will see 1.5m to 2m of your small intestine bypassed and reattached to the lower part of your stomach, meaning your food will have circumvented up to 2 meters of intestines before absorption even begins.
As mentioned above, due to the efficiency of this type of surgery, your time in surgery can be greatly reduced by (on average) 50 minutes. Also, the surgery is far less complicated and therefore, apart from reducing surgery time, it also reduces the risk of complications due to the minimal relocation and attachment of the small intestine.
But the biggest benefit is that even though mini-gastric bypass surgery is more efficient and quicker, weight loss is the same, and in some cases has be found to be greater than normal gastric bypass surgery.
