Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD) is a procedure that aims to create restrictive and malabsorption aspects for the patient. This reduces the amount of time that the body has to absorb calories and fat.
The restrictive portion of the procedure sees the surgeon remove approximately 70% of the stomach. The malabsorptive portion of the surgery redirects a lengthy portion of the small intestine, creating two routes and one common channel. The shorter of the two, the digestive loop, carries food to the common channel. The much longer pathway, the biliopancreatic loop, carries bile from the liver to the common channel.
The BPD is designed to reduce the amount of time the body has to capture calories from food in the small intestine and to limit the absorption of fat. Patients of this procedure sometimes only absorb 20% of the fat they intake.
