The Benefits of
Gastric Banding
Though it can seem like an extreme measure, gastric banding surgery can have such significant advantages for a patient that it can make the operation well worthwhile. For those whose lives are endangered by morbid obesity or excess weight, the operation may not only save their life but can potentially give them a boost in self confidence and a greater sense of well being.
Gastric banding surgery can be relatively convenient compared to other methods. The less intensive nature of the treatment is intended to ensure quicker recovery time and a shorter stay in hospital. Patients can often resume relatively normal lives within several weeks of the operation.
Unlike most surgical procedures, gastric banding can be completely reversible. If the lap band is taken away, your stomach can continue to function as if the band was never there. This is due to the relatively gentle and simple nature of the operation. The surgeon simply fastens the silicon band to the upper part of your gut. There is no cutting or re-sectioning of the small intestine involved. Since the band is merely attached, it can be easily adjusted or if required, removed.
For patients suffering from obesity related illnesses such as high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, there can be a gradual decline in the intensity of those medical disorders as a direct result of treatment.
All surgical procedures carry some risk but gastric banding can be less risky than other types of surgery. There can also be significantly less risk of treatment related life-threatening issues post surgery. During other procedures where the intestines are bypassed, there can be risks associated with malabsorption however, during gastric banding surgery, the intestines are not bypassed. In fact, this procedure may carry significantly less risk than other types of weight loss surgery. According to Specialist Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Durmush, “the risk of mortality from the gastric band in Australia 2.5 times lower than commonly performed procedures like gall bladder surgery.”
Obesity is now a considerable problem in our society. In addition to the increased risk of illnesses associated with obesity, excess weight can reduce your self confidence, discourage you from undertaking the exercise you need, reduce your desire to socialise and make you feel utterly miserable. It can become harder and harder to take control of the situation. If you consider yourself in need of weight loss surgery, why not talk to a health care professional about gastric banding? It might just be the key to your new life.
