Obesity.
We can help.
More than 60% of Australians are overweight or obese. Obesity is thought to be caused by numerous factors including changes in our environment, our lifestyles and genetics. Obesity is known to contribute to over 35 different health conditions, it can dramatically reduce our quality of life and even reduce the length of our life by up to 14 years!
Obesity is a disease.
Obesity is a disease caused by a range of genetic and environmental factors, just like heart disease and diabetes. Obesity causes high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease, infertility, incontinence, diabetes and the list goes on. Considering the implications of obesity, it is grossly under treated and largely misunderstood.
What treatments are available?
The three main treatments for obesity are lifestyle modification, medications and weight loss surgery. It is true that each of these can work for people with different needs, and thats why we provide all of these options at Life Weight Loss Centre; so YOU have a choice. However the research suggests that weight loss surgery is the most effective treatment, however many people feel reluctant to consider this option due to misconceptions about the safety and benefits of the procedures. The reality is that weight loss procedures are some of the safest surgical procedures performed today.
Diet and Exercise?
A healthy lifestyle can improve your health immensely. The only problem is that lifestyle changes alone are not very effective at achieving long term weight loss. Research shows that 90% of people who lose more than 10kgs by making lifestyle changes alone, will regain the weight within 2 years. However combining treatments such as weight loss surgery and lifestyle modification gives the best results by far. Life Weight Loss has a team of healthy lifestyle specialists who make lifestyle changes easy.
Regulating satiety causes weight loss.
Satiety relates to our hunger and how full we feel. People who are obese have lower levels of satiety and sometimes have to eat more to feel full. Your stomach and gastro-intestinal tract are designed to send information to the brain to tell us when we are full. The information is processed by a part of the brain called the Hypothalamus which releases numerous hormones and brain signals that control our temperature, fatigue, sleep and hunger. It is thought that the hypothalamus does not function correctly in people with obesity causing constant hunger stimulation, even though the body has ample amounts of energy available. Weight loss surgery simply influences the information being sent to the brain from the stomach, which essentially speeds up metabolism, reduces fatigue and makes you feel less hungry.
Your health.
Obesity is associated with many health and medical problems. Whats worse is that the progression of the disease is largely silent, slowly affecting every body system with little to no obvious signs.

Obesity and quality of life
As well as affecting our health, obesity significantly impairs our quality of life. Obesity causes mobility problems, joint pain, fatigue, poor sleep, excessive perspiration, impaired sex life, and difficulty finding properly fitting clothes, and thats just to name a few. People who are obese can experience prejudice for employment, difficulty in creating and maintaining relationships, and not being treated with respect.
